Deck Designs, Building a Deck
So you want to design a deck and then build it yourself? Whilst deck building and deck design can give you afford you plenty of satisfaction, it can also give you a lot of grief. So before you embark on a project as big as deck building structurally, you may want to start with something smaller (see garden structures plans for other ideas). There's nothing worse than starting something as large and as visible as a deck and then end up with a less than perfect job or worse still, a job half finished because not enough research and homework was done beforehand in the design stage.
With a job as big as this, success is all in the initial planning and design stage. How you design your deck is dependent on lots of factors - your land (clay soils or sandy soils), the layout of your house, how large do you want the deck to be, do you want to include a pergola structure or some form of shade, what are you going to use the deck for, what materials are you going to use for guard rails, the look you are hoping to achieve. As with all deck designs, the foundations of your deck is paramount to success and safety - just because you can't see the supporting posts down below does not mean you pay less attention to them, they are the pillars upon which your deck rests on. Get the foundations of your deck design right and your deck is going to last a lot longer than one that will sag and become unstable through the years. Start by reading these books and a video - they will give you great ideas about deck design and planning and offer inspirational looks that only pictures can provide.
