Door mats

Your door mat says a lot about you.  That may come as a surprise but it's true.  I find that door mats set the tone for the 'welcome'.  A cheerful 'welcome' sign is certainly a great way to greet your visitors.  Choosing your door mat to suit the style of your front garden is a great way to get that coordinated look right to the front door step.  Just as a formal door mat would look strangely out of place for a cottage style garden, a cutesy style door mat wouldn't look right with a formal topiarized front yard.  There's a variety of styles you can pick from - wooden door mats, the coir/fiber type door mat, even cast aluminum door mats for that unique look.

Door mats - fiber (coir)

These are probably the most common of the lot.  That's not to say that they aren't useful in themselves.  The advantage of coir or fiber door mats is that they are biodegradable - great for the environmentally conscious.  They are pretty hardwearing except when exposed to too much moisture.  The other disadvantage is that as they get more worn, visitors who try to scrape mud off the door mat can inadvertently trample all those coir fibers through the house.  When that starts to happen, it's time for a replacement.

Door mats - wooden

Wooden door mats are usually constructed of cedar.  Some poorly constructed wooden door mats have spaces between the slats that are too wide - so if you don't want your prospective guests on stillettos to get their heels trapped.
